A Rothesay High graduate was recognized by the Youth Apprenticeship Program recently as one of its top students.
Lisa Wiggins received the Gregory Forbes Memorial Award – given to a graduating youth apprentice in School District 6 or 8 whose attitude and performance consistently demonstrated perseverance, responsibility and commitment to the goals of the program.
“We looked at various students who participated, and it’s never an easy choice, but Lisa’s community involvement was a factor,” said Heather Stilwell, co-ordinator of the program for District 6.
The Youth Apprenticeship Program is a two-year initiative that pairs students with employers. Its goal is to provide students in grades 10 and 11 with paid employment and work experience, as well as a chance to acquire employability skills, network with employers and explore career possibilities. It also provides employers with potential future employees and gives them a chance to shape the workforce of tomorrow.
“It’s a great program,” Ms. Wiggins commented. “It gives students a chance to try out a career.”
On Aug. 19, 81 students from districts 6 and 8 graduated from the program.
Ms. Wiggins has spent the past two years working as the digital curatorial assistant for the Rothesay Living Museum.
During that time, Ms. Stilwell said Ms. Wiggins’ attendance and overall performance were outstanding. With help from museum curator Brian Perkins, she helped launch virtual exhibits pertaining to Rothesay history. She also became an advocate for women’s issues, as well as creating jobs for students with learning disabilities.
“She was always one of those to offer when we needed a volunteer for anything,” she said. “We (..)went beyond the protocols for the Youth Apprenticeship Program.
Ms. Wiggins said the program has given her career direction, in experience and employment opportunities.
“I’m very grateful to Mr. Perkins and all the Youth Apprenticeship people for hiring me,”she said “and for all the doors he’s opened. One thing has led to another and given me lots of other opportunities.”
