Rothesay Council Highlights — October 13, 2026

Rothesay Council Highlights — October 13, 2026
Here are the highlights from our regular council meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Opening Remarks
  • Mayor Alexander opened the meeting with the Town’s land acknowledgement and a teaching on the legacy of day schools in New Brunswick, following the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. While New Brunswick did not operate residential schools, Indigenous children from this province were still affected — many were sent to residential schools in other provinces, and approximately a dozen Catholic-run day schools operated in our province following Confederation. The last day school in New Brunswick closed in 1992 at Metepenagiag (Red Bank First Nation). Mayor Alexander noted the legacy of these schools continues to affect Indigenous communities today.
  • Members of council also shared updates from recent events. Councillor Brown recently attended a Regional Services Commission meeting and the fire department’s open house. Deputy Mayor Mackay French attended the Chamber of Commerce’s State of the Region event, and also reminded residents about the intergenerational fashion show happening this evening (Oct. 14) in support of the RICC. Mayor Alexander attended the 100th anniversary flag raising for the Royal Canadian Legion and the 80th anniversary celebration of Branch 58.
Decisions & Motions
  • Council gave first and second reading to By-law 2-10-43, rezoning a portion of 88 Hampton Road to accommodate a veterinary clinic, following a public hearing held on September 28.
  • Council approved a donation of $5,200 to the New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation (NBMEF), supporting medical training and education across the province.
  • Council approved Rothesay’s share of a 2026 operating funding gap for the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department. The $281,484 contribution — drawn from operational reserves — ensures the KVFD can continue delivering the level of service our community depends on.
  • Council also authorized the purchase of one new patrol vehicle for the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force, funded from 2026 surplus with no new municipal tax dollars required. This decision reflects the Town’s ongoing commitment to public safety.
  • Council authorized a contract with Shadcomm Ltd. in the amount of $29,756.25 (HST included) to replace the aging control panel at the Frances Avenue Lift Station, keeping a key piece of the Town’s wastewater infrastructure functioning reliably.
  • Council accepted cash in lieu of land for public purposes in connection with a subdivision at 50 Chatwin Street.
  • Council passed By-law 2-10-46 to rezone 9 Clark Road from Single Family Residential (R1B) to Two Family Residential (R2), allowing the existing home to be used as a two-unit dwelling. The public hearing for this application is scheduled for Monday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bill McGuire Centre (95 James Renforth Drive).
  • Council cancelled the public hearing previously scheduled for October 19 regarding a proposed rezoning at 28 Chapel Road. The application will return to the Planning Advisory Committee before any new hearing is scheduled.
Next Meeting
  • Special Council meeting (Budget Presentation) — Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 PM.
