Renforth Wharf: Ice Fishing Access
Renforth Wharf: Ice Fishing Access
Rothesay is advising the public of access changes at the Renforth Wharf.
Following discussion and consideration of safety, environmental protection, infrastructure protection, and ongoing maintenance concerns, access has been restricted from Town owned lands in the Renforth Wharf area.
To help manage access and support public safety, a gate has been installed at the Renforth Wharf. Emergency and authorized personnel have access through the gate as required.
Please note that the gate only allows for pedestrian and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) access. Cars, trucks, tow trucks, and other vehicles are not permitted access from Town owned lands.
The town of Rothesay recognizes that ice fishing is an important seasonal activity for many residents and visitors. These measures are not intended to discourage use, but rather to balance access with public safety, reduce risk related to changing and unpredictable ice conditions, protect the environment, and limit potential damage to municipal property.
Residents and visitors are reminded that ice conditions can change quickly and that individuals are responsible for their own safety while on the ice.
The town of Rothesay appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the public as these measures are implemented. Any updates or changes will be communicated through official municipal channels.
Ice safety Tips from GNB:
- Ice is never 100% safe. The province does not measure ice thickness for recreational purposes. Your safety is your responsibility!
- Let others know where you’re planning to fish and when you plan to return.
- Wear appropriate clothing and carry safety equipment.
- Before you venture out, check local ice conditions.
- Watch for changes in colour as you move across the ice. Clear blue ice is the strongest; white or opaque ice is much weaker; grey ice indicates weak spots.
- The only way to be certain is to measure ice thickness
- Remember that local weather conditions, winds and currents make coastal ice unstable and unpredictable!
