Town Hall

Rothesay Council is supported by many Committees of Council and also participates in decision-making in the greater Saint John region through various Boards and Commissions.  Rothesay residents are invited to participate in the local decision-making process by offering to serve on Rothesay Committees or as a Rothesay representative on regional Boards and Commissions.

Town Committees consist of the Planning Advisory Committee, Public Works and Infrastructure, Water & Sewage, Parks and Recreation and the Heritage Preservation Review Board.

External appointments consist of Rothesay Regional Joint Board of Police Commissioners, Board of Fire Commissioners (Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department), Kennebecasis Public Library Board, Imperial Theatre, Harbour Station, Trade and Convention Centre, Aquatic Centre and Enterprise Saint John.

There are varying durations on terms and the number of eligible terms, dependent on by-laws, agreements or legislation. Typically appointments are made in December but may also become available during the calendar year and are usually two or three years in duration.

Applications are reviewed by the Nominating Committee and recommendations are forwarded to Council for approval.

An application form is available online that can be completed and returned to Mary Jane Banks, Town Clerk by email or regular mail.

Rothesay operates under a Town Council/Town Manager form of government. There have been recent changes to the Municipalities Act wherein Town Council is now elected to a four year term of office (Bill 43).  Town Council is elected by the citizens (held May 12, 2008) and is responsible for making the major policy decisions.  The Town Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and administration of the Town and reports directly to Rothesay Council. Council members represent Rothesay as representatives on external boards and agencies, as do the Town Manager and senior staff members.

The current Town Hall was constructed in 1991 and, along with Town staff, also houses the administration offices for School District 6.

Rothesay currently employs 37 permanent, full-time employees, as well as 5 casual labourers.  During the summer months, Town staff more than doubles in number to accommodate supervision of the summer recreation programs, along with the parks and fields maintenance.
