A presentation was made to Saint John Common Council on Monday, September 24, 2007 with respect to drinking water quality and trihalomethane (THM) levels. THMs or trihalomethanes, are chemical compounds that can be formed when water is disinfected with chlorine. They occur when chlorine reacts with organic matter, naturally present in water, such as decaying leaves. For this reason, THMs are common in surface water supplies throughout Canada. A meeting was held October 3, 2007 with residents of Kennebecasis Park and Hastings Cove. Dr. Scott Giffin, Medical Officer of Health for Region 2 was in attendance to answer questions.
More information on THMs is available in .pdf format from the City of Saint John website site and the Health Canada website under drinking water quality guidelines and Environmental and Workplace Health. |
